What is Rogaining?
Rogaining is a team activity for people of all ages and levels of fitness. Rogaining appeals to all types of outdoor sports enthusiasts – from recreational hikers and bikers, to elite level orienteers, runners, mountain-bikers, and ultra-athletes.
Your challenge and success come from your ability to read the map, to plan a route through as many checkpoints as possible, and to navigate your course within the time limit.
New rogainers are always welcome and organizers are more than happy to help you get started.

ROGAINE stands for Rugged Outdoor Group Adventure Involving Navigation and Endurance.
Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation, in which teams of two to five people visit as many checkpoints (“controls”) as they wish within a set time period. The checkpoints are marked on a map that competitors receive shortly before the start. Checkpoints have different point values, and can be visited in any order, so strategy and route selection are key elements to achieving the highest point score. Teamwork, endurance, competition and an appreciation for the natural environment are features of the sport.
The traditional rogaine is 24 hours in duration, but shorter events are common.
Learn more about rogaining.

Rogaine Israel Spring 2013 is offering 5-hour, 8-hour, 12-hour, and 16-hour events for those on foot, and a 7-hour event for bike riders.

Rogaine Israel Spring 2013 will  take competitors on trails through varying vegetation and terrain with vistas of Mesuah Ridge, Britannia Park, Nahal HaElah and Tel Tzafit.

Event Organizer: Israel Sport Orienteering Association

Event Center
The assembly area will be at Mitzpeh Masuah in Britannia Park. Personal gear can be left at the event center, and participants may pass through the assembly area at any time during the event. See map and directions below.

Gear Provided by Organizers
Every competitor will receive a map prepared especially for the event; it has a scale of 1:30,000.
Every team will need one Emit electronic timing card, as used by competitors at Israel Sport Orienteering Association events. The organizers will loan an Emit card to any team in need of one.
Water points will be marked on the map.

Safety
The terrain has many deep pits, caves, and cliffs, some of which are not marked on the map. Maintain a high level of alertness when moving off-trail. Do not read the map while moving (especially in darkness) to avoid unforeseen falls, and potentially serious injury.

Required Gear
Every team must carry a mobile phone whose phone number has been registered with the event organizers.
Every competitor in all events must be carrying at least 2.0 liter of water at the start of the event.
All competitors in the 12-hour and 16-hour events must be equipped with a flashlight/headlamp. These competitors will also receive whistles from the event organizers.
Every competitor in the bike event must wear a helmet.

Communication
All teams must carry at least two mobile phones, well charged at the start, whose numbers have been registered with the organizers prior to the start.

All teams in the 12-hour or 16-hour events are required to send a text message to one of the phone numbers printed on the map, between 6:00 to 6:30 am., specifying  the exact time the message was sent, the team’s name and general location. For example: “6:04, Team Happy Days, south of station 45.” A confirmation message will be sent within 10 minutes. If you do not received a confirmation, you must call one of the phone numbers on the map.

Recommended Gear
Compass, food, long pants, extra pair of socks, first-aid kit, small pack for carrying gear.

Forbidden Equipment
The use of maps other than those expressly sanctioned by the organizers is prohibited.
The only navigational aids that may be carried on the course are magnetic compasses, watches and copies of the competition map.
Upon receipt of the rogaine map from the organizers, competitors are prohibited from using any other navigational aids, including other maps, aerial photographs, pedometers, altimeters, GPS devices with map-display capabilities, and smartphone applications.
Computers may not be used by competitors for planning their strategy.

During the competition, competitors may use only the food and equipment which they have carried from the start, or have left at the assembly area for later retrieval. No provisions may be cached in advance of the event. Only water may be refilled at any of the 12 water stations spread throughout the rogaine area.

Checkpoints
45 checkpoints will be spread across the rogaine area. Checkpoints are marked by orange and white flags (orienteering control markers). Every checkpoint has an electronic timing device with a unique code.

Each checkpoint has a numeric code, which is also its point value, from 31 to 90. This number appears on the map and on the checkpoint itself. Each checkpoint in the field is also marked by yellow flagging tape labeled with the checkpoint number and “Rogaine 2013”. Typically the yellow tape will be visible from a distance while the checkpoint control flag will be slightly hidden (behind a bush or tree) to reduce the chance of theft.

Scoring
Each team’s score is determined by the total value of the checkpoints visited.
Points are deducted for being overtime, according to the following rate per minute or part thereof.

  • Foot 5 hours – 5 points
  • Foot 8 hours – 8 points
  • Foot 12 hours – 12 points
  • Foot 16 hours – 16 points
  • Bike 7 hours – 7 points

Teams finishing more than thirty minutes late will be considered overtime, and therefore disqualified.

Rules
The rules for the event are based on the international rogaining rules. In case of discrepancies between those rules and those defined by the organizers of Israel Rogaine Spring 2013, the rules for this event will be the operative ones.

Event Site – Map Area
The rogaine map covers an area of about 116 square kilometers.
The area boundaries are Highway 6 to the west, Route 383 to the north, Route 38 to the east (up to Beit Guvrin to the south), and local roads and main trails to the south. Route 353 crosses the map from east to south, and Nahal HaElah crosses from north-east to west. On the eastern side of the map is a relatively high and steep ridge, which slopes gradually to the west. The region has a mix of planted forests, natural Mediterranean woods,  and both fallow and cultivated fields. Several rural villages are within the map.
